In the past year, the fight for racial justice has become a part of a cultural movement across the United States. However, given the history of racism in our country and the discriminatory practices in our social systems, this is only the beginning. If you are looking for a way to enact change, here are some steps you can take to help further the social justice movement.
Educate Yourself
Education is an integral part of promoting change. Take the time to read books and articles on racial inequality written by people of color. Listen to people of color when they speak about the injustices they have experienced. Listening to your friends, colleagues, and other members of your community can help them feel validated and help you gain a broader perspective about the current systems of racism in your community.
Have Difficult Conversations
In order to create institutional and structural change, we must take steps in our everyday lives to combat racism and other microaggressions. Take note of what you and the people around you do and say every day.
Is one of your Black coworkers regularly being ignored or talked down to in meetings? Do you catch yourself using more slang when talking to people of color? When you notice microaggressions or other acts of racial injustice, you should address it. Often people do not recognize their own racial biases, so having difficult conversations about our actions can be a step toward meaningful change.
Donate to Social Justice Organizations and Sign Petitions
Many social justice groups have formed during the Black Lives Matter movement providing lots of options to donate to the overall cause of social justice. Donating money to smaller groups and mutual aid organizations can help make a greater impact on your community.
If you do not have the means to donate money, consider signing petitions pushing for policy change. Whether it is access to proper education, food deserts, or police reform, there are plenty of areas that require systemic change in every community.
Take it to the Polls
The politicians we elect to public office are essential in fighting for social justice. Voting for state and local candidates that align with your values and wish to introduce social justice reform will bring equality in the form of legislation. Holding these elected officials accountable is just as important. Making sure they carry out their promises ensures that social justice always remains a priority.
